It is not every day that you get to play a US Open course. With only 6 US Open courses open to the public, my trip to Erin Hills in 2021 has been the highlight of my golf life so far. Haley & I planned our Memorial Day Weekend to visit friends in Chicago and I was not going to miss a chance to play Erin Hills. There are plenty of great courses in Wisconsin but with Erin Hills only a 2-hour drive from Chicago, I quickly booked my tee time with my friend Ryan.

With the US Open history and it is ranked #46 on Golf Digest’s, America’s Top 100 Courses (#9 Public Course) the expectations for the round were very high. We woke up early to make the trip up to Wisconsin & our weather was perfect for a late May day. Upon arrival, you enter the property and drive up to the clubhouse & drop your clubs off at the caddie barn. After we dropped our clubs off, the caddies took our bag down to the range as we checked in and did some damage in the pro shop. We met up with our caddie, warmed up on the range, short game area & putting green before heading to the starters box and then the first tee.

Erin Hills is a walking-only course so we did plenty of stretching before setting out on walking over 7 miles during our round. The course was created by receding glaciers that formed the course's rolling and undulating terrain which makes the walk tougher but more beautiful.

The course is very wide open so it allowed us to hit our bad shots around the course without getting stuck behind trees. This made our round even more enjoyable since we like to hit our fair share of bad shots during the round. The highlight of the round came on the 4th hole when Ryan hit his fairway bunker shot to 5 feet from 150 yards away. The entire round at Erin Hills was a highlight but after our almost 5 hours walk around the course there was nothing better than grabbing a beer on the patio.

We didn’t spend the night there but Erin Hills has some great options for overnight guests to complete your golf trip experience.
