Pollença, Mallorca
We recently returned from Pollença, Mallorca and we absolutely loved this island destination.
Blog:
We stayed at the airport in Munich because we (I) decided to book the 5:50 a.m. flight. Our choices were 5:50 am or 2 pm on Condor and I wanted to maximize our time relaxing in Mallorca after what I knew would be a busy few days. This wouldn't have been terrible if it wasn’t for the fact that by that evening in Munich baby girl was clearly not feeling well. She pooped on the way to the hotel on the train and it took FOREVER to get from the train to the hotel and then for the front desk girl to stop yapping and give us our keys so Drew could go change her. By this point, she was a blowout central, so he decided to change her in the tub - which she did NOT enjoy whatsoever. We’re not sure if she just got herself so worked up, if we’d maybe given her the wrong water, or if she had something else going on but she ended up throwing up twice that evening. We eventually were able to get her to bed, but she didn’t sleep for long periods… and it was already 9 pm by this time. My mom and I decided to head into the airport first to check our bags so baby could sleep more, but naturally, they wouldn’t let us check out bags without Drew and baby being there, too. Thankfully we had splurged for business class (this is like paying for business class on Frontier - not actually that big of a deal, haha), and we had a fast check-in and could cut the line at security.
By the time we got through security and to our gate, baby was definitely struggling. I was very afraid of what the flight would be like because we really didn’t know what was going on with her at that time. Drew was able to get her to fall asleep in his lap for most of the flight which was great. When we landed we walked FOREVER to get our bags (this airport was MASSIVE and so unexpected), and then headed to get our rental car. All-in-all this process wasn’t too bad and we proceeded to try and figure out how to get our bags into the car and how to install a foreign car seat lol. We finally got on the road and were about 15 minutes outside of the city into our 45-minute drive when baby just couldn’t be consoled. She was SO unhappy and upset, it was so hard to see. We knew we needed to get her some Tylenol so I directed us to a supermarket as our Airbnb was not yet available for check-in. I learned that in Spain all medication is only available at the Pharmacy (which explains why they are so popular), but was very frustrating in the moment. I think we were all ready to lose our minds at this point, so we needed caffeine and food and I led us to park in the city and stop for food and drinks at Panord forn Pollença. We also walked over to the pharmacy and were able to get some infant Tylenol. ALL of this to say traveling with baby is not very glamorous, and Instagram is such a highlight reel. We were going through so much I didn’t have the bandwidth to share more than a few photos, but know that it was not easy.
After we were able to check in to our Airbnb and get baby a nap, everything started to get easier. The first day she was still not feeling good at all, and ended up taking all of her naps on Drew - but at least we were able to be laying in a comfortable spot and could hangout/watch tv/decompress. This first night we grabbed a very early dinner in the city square at Ca n’Olesa. The pizza was fantastic and Drew picked an excellent white wine from Spain that was super delicious. Baby got to try some gelato and then we all then headed back and crashed - ready for baby to be feeling better.
Day two we woke up and decided to head down to the port to check out the water and see if baby would like her feet in the ocean. We had a great breakfast and coffee sitting outside and then as we headed down to the water baby fell asleep, so we took that as an excuse to have a drink - hah! After she woke up she was still very cranky and snuggly - but she tolerated sitting in the water which was super cute. I absolutely loved her reaction. We knew we needed to get her back for a good nap at the airbnb. After she napped we went for lunch at La Scalinata, but she was super fussy here too, so we eventually took her back. Drew and I had booked a wine tasting - so my mom watched baby for us, such a perk! We walked to our meeting spot and enjoyed an awesome tasting with Wine Tasting Mallorca. We got to experience a few different Mallorca wines and learn about the wines on the island. Sven was super knowledgeable and helped us grow our wine-tasting language. I wish we could find specialized tastings like this everywhere we go! We enjoyed a great dinner at the local wine bar after and enjoyed trying some more of the wines we’d experienced at our tasting.
Day three we woke up finally feeling relaxed and baby seemed to be doing much better. Drew headed out early to play golf at Club de Golf Alcanada and my mom and I waited for baby to wake up. She slept in BIG time, but we eventually were able to head out for coffee and breakfast where baby enjoyed a croissant and making a mess everywhere! Drew decided to just play 9 so we waited for him to return and then headed back to the airbnb for a nap. We enjoyed shopping around town for the afternoon, sitting on our amazing rooftop patio at our airbnb and generally just feeling so much better. We decided to head out to the square for one last dinner, picking Restaurante Il Giardino, and I am SO glad we did. We had an amazing wine, great food, and baby got her own high chair to sit in and watch everything going on in the city square.
Our Recommendations:
Where we stayed:
An Airbnb
As we learned from our wine tasting guide, Pollenca has the lowest occupency rates on the island so there are not very many rooms/houses for rent and/or hotels. We loved this about the area, it made it feel more local and special, but it might be harder to find a stay.
We would highly recommend our Airbnb it was in a great location and had everything we needed when traveling with baby.
